Lemoyne College

Beardsley Design Associates was developing a proposal for an addition to LeMoyne college’s main administration building. They hadn’t worked with the client for many years and were eager to prove that they were still quite capable of providing exciting design services and personal attention to a small college. The project was a north-facing, windowless section of campus that had been neglected through many campus renovations since it’s inception in 1946.
Gary encouraged BDA to take a broader approach and think about how the building addition itself would relate to the campus as a whole. This particular portion of the building was at the center of a campus axis that was really only visible from aerial photos. Gary decided to emphasize this relationship by focusing the entry of the campus toward the addition. By treating the North side of the campus with as much dignity as the South, Gary proposed that this could be a wonderful feature for visitors entering campus from a major expressway. LeMoyne enjoyed the ideas we created so much that they short-listed them, invited them for an interview, and added them to the short list for an additional project that included an adjacent wing.
