Process

Many of my clients ask me about my process in creating a rendering. It’s difficult for me to explain how I get from a blank canvas to a final rendering, and every project is somewhat unique.

Some people are genuinely interested in the process, and some simply want to know if there is a “trick” or “filter” that I use. Unfortunately, there’s no magic bullet; Photoshop filters look like filters, and 3D programs that create “hand rendered techniques” look like… well Photoshop filters, honestly.

Not Van Gogh

artists do not paint like this...

Although my work moves in and out of the computer, most of my digital techniques have been honed to match the physical techniques which they are meant to emulate.

Here’s the first render of a fictional urban hillside (with a fiery sunset.)

This rendering was fast and loose, and took under 7 hours to render. A snapshot was taken every 20 seconds.
I plan to do a series of time-lapse videos of my work, digital and otherwise.
